SeaWheeze Recap Part Two.

Saturday morning came quick but my pre-race excitement made it easier to wake up. I got dressed and took a quick Outfit of the Day (OOTD) selfie.

The weather was cool and breezy with an intermittent mist. We stopped at the hotel lobby to beg for a couple garbage bags since we didn’t pack proper rain gear. They came in handy once we got to the starting area. I was freezing. We met up with our friend, Rachel, and headed to the start. Jon lined up in the 1:45 corral and I made the questionable (in hindsight) decision to start in the 2:30 corral. I’ll talk more about this later. Each corral went off in 5 minute increments. It felt like forever before I actually crossed the start line but in reality, it was only about 25 minutes.

It was blast to finally be off and running! I let the excitement get the best of me and started out faster than I should. At this point, I tried to slow my pace a bit but my Garmin was tweaking out. At first, I thought my settings had automatically switched to kilometers. LOL I’m such a dummy sometimes! I was starting to get anxious about not being able to track my pace and distance. UGH This was about the point where I wondered if I’m too dependent on my GPS watch. After about 10 minutes of running, my watch sorted itself out. PHEW!

I talked myself through the 13.1 miles. Ticking down a mile at a time. This has become an effective way for me to chop up long runs into easy to handle bites. 😀 WARNING: Vent session ahead! If I learned something this year, it’s to start in a faster corral. Not because I’m faster than 2:30 pace but because it might help to avoid the gridlock on the seawall. It’s frustrating to be running along, in a nice groove, and then have to slow way down because people are walking three across chatting away. This lack of run etiquette drives me batty. Another major pet peeve is folks running with LOUD music. USE EARBUDS FOR PETE’S SAKE! I was leap frogging someone who was blasting Taylor Swift from their device. GAH! I just can’t. Can’t, I said. All that nonsense aside, I had SUCH an amazing time. The course is beautiful. The weather ended up being to our advantage. Mid 60s with a light breeze was perfect for the run. Here are some pics from the finish line festivities.

So. Tired.

So. Tired. That medal weighed half a pound. I’m not even kidding.

That’s all for my recap. Jon and I are excited to try and register for 2016. Hope we get in! We’re heading to Kauai in a few days. Hopefully, The Kauai Half Marathon will go as smoothly! 😀

Are We There Yet?

We made it to the middle of week 11. Boredom and brain fatigue are starting to creep in. My training runs are not as fun as they were a few weeks ago. UGH I’m sticking as closely to the plan as I can muster but it’s been a struggle. I figure these ups and downs are normal. At the same time, I’m getting really excited for SeaWheeze which is a little over 2 weeks away. EEEP!

I skipped my recovery run last Sunday (end of week 9). Week 10, I ran on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings.

Wednesday, 7/22/15:

Neon PC Runner socks and Hoka One One Clifton.

I took my new Hoka Clifton out for a spin. They were springy and super light. The sole is a little thicker than I’m used to which caused me to scuff the bottoms here and there. Not a big deal. I was just happy I didn’t trip and fall. I thought my PRO Compression neon PC Runner socks went well with the bright Hokas. 😀 By the way, if you’re looking for a good, low profile running sock, these are great. No slipping, sliding or disappearing into your shoe. PRO Compression also makes my favorite compression sleeve. I think I’ve posted about them before but they’re just so convenient to wear around with flip flops.

Friday, 7/24/15: 4 miles (45:59).

Early Friday morning. 4 miles.

I took a last minute day off and went over to my mom’s to help her with some bathroom updates she was having done. As payment, she made lunch. 😛 Korean dumpling soup or Su Je Bi. One of my favorite dishes of all time. Mouth scorching jalapeno slices are mandatory. YUM!

Saturday, 7/25/15:

Faster than last Saturday! Weeeee!!!

Faster than last Saturday! Weeeee!!!

Saturday.

Saturday.

Saturday’s 9 miles came and went. Two miles in, I was a little skeptical about being able to finish. My right foot was still giving me grief and my head wasn’t in it. But somehow, I kept plugging along and telling myself to go another mile. It got easier once I hit the halfway point but overall not a good day. I was surprised to see that my time was about 8 minutes quicker than last Saturday. Unexpected for sure.

The remainder of my weekend was rest, relaxation, homemade guacamole and spending time with Jon. Boo had to get in his snuggle time too.

That’s all I’ve got this time around. The next time I post will most likely be RIGHT before SeaWheeze weekend! WOOOOO HOOOO!!! Let the madness begin!!!

Until next time, thanks for reading!

Kauai Half Marathon Expo

Annnnnd I’m back! Our flight landed at 9:30pm last night and my brain is still on island time. The last 11 days zipped by but it feels like an eternity since I ran the half marathon on 8/31/14! LOL I’m attempting to post the photos in chronological order but that’s based on my spotty memory. haha

Breakfast at SeaTac Airport

Breakfast at SeaTac Airport

We took a cab to the airport at around 6:30am. Breakfast on the plane was surprisingly good. I had ham and pineapple quiche made with a pot pie type crust. OMG, it was so good! Jon got the teriyaki chicken patty over a biscuit with scrambled eggs and sweet potatoes.

I made sure to pick up a bag of my FAVORITE travel treats. I only buy these when I’m flying. Odd. 😀

This time of year, Kauai is 3 hours behind Pacific Daylight Time so we arrived around noon. I love it when you gain time. 🙂 It felt so good to be sitting near the pool at Koa Kea again.

We took a quick walk up to Whalers General Store to pick up some water and snacks. If you stay in Poipu, this convenience store is, well, convenient. Derp. They also have a good variety of souvenirs and treats which make great gifts. I had to pick up some Chocolate Toffee mac nuts, of course. If you haven’t tried these, go find them! You’re welcome. 😛

On Saturday (August 30th), we had breakfast at Red Salt (included in our room package) and then went to pick up our race packets at the marathon Expo. The Expo was held at the Grand Hyatt Kauai. It’s a beautifully landscaped property with lots of fancy schmancy birds lurking about. I might have had more fun talking to the birds than at the Expo. Almost. haha

OK, I apologize for what you’re about to see. This pic is downright creepy but I was trying to get a photo of my big head with the official Kauai Marathon merchandise section. Fail.

Jon and I got to chat a bit with Bart Yasso. Wow, really nice guy! He offered excellent advice and some insight on the half marathon course.

Since this post is so long, I’ll post the actual half marathon recap in a separate post. Stay tuned. Thanks for reading!

8 days until the BIG day!

I’m amazed by how quickly the days are flying by but also by how SLOWLY my work days are passing. LOL It will take every ounce of focus in my pea brain to stay productive next week. I just have to hang tough until next Friday. Then, Jon and I will be buzzing our way to Lihue! WOOOO HOOOO!!! I’ve got a “MUST TRY” list that’s ridiculous! Just a few places on my list: http://kauaijuiceco.com/ (so stoked to try Best Breakfast!), Aloha Aina Juice Bar http://www.yelp.com/biz/aloha-aina-juice-bar-koloa (excited to try my first ever açai bowl) and http://www.thefreshshave.com/ (shave ice). I’ve heard a lot of good things about Josselin’s Tapas Bar so we’ll hopefully have time to check it out.

Jon and I went to the track at the high school next door for a short run. Jon mentioned the students built a community garden on campus with loads of vegetables ready for picking. When he met with the school principal last week, she told him the vegetables were free for the picking. Since I didn’t have a bag, I just sampled a cherry tomato. YUM, fresh garden veggies. NOM.

Nice pose. So cheesy.

The students did a great job! Rhubarb is a beautiful thing…just sayin’. 😀 Too bad I didn’t get a pic. Derp.

The garden was pretty awesome! Ignore my big ole head.

The garden was pretty awesome! Ignore my big ole head.

I know I’ve already said this but I’m claiming senility. I’m going into this marathon with positive thoughts which is difficult since I’m a “realist”. haha I’m going to enjoy every bit of wildlife and tropical scenery on the course. I’m hoping to see and meet the locals in the neighborhoods we run through and I REALLY hope their dogs and puppies are spectating with them. 😀 I ❤ dogs! I’ll be taking many, many photos along the way. Unless, of course, I’m passed out in a ditch somewhere delirious from heat, humidity and dehydration. I keed, I keed.

Until next time, thanks for reading!

Two Weeks Plus One

I’m a poor excuse for a blogger, LOL. Sorry for the silence. I haven’t run since my last post so not much to blog about. I’ve been avoiding my training runs. Self-sabotage? Maybe BUT I’m still crossing that finish line!

On the other hand, my husband has stuck to his training plan 100%. He’s been waking up early, sometimes at four in the morning(!) on weekends to get in his long runs. I’m envious of his discipline and determination. I tend to procrastinate and let my inner fat kid make all the decisions. Ugh! My plan is to get out and run this weekend. Maybe I’ll have an update within the next few days. One bit of good news, I’ve lost about 9 pounds since the beginning of June just by making better food choices.

Thankfully, the weather finally cooled down a bit the past few days. My new favorite dinner has been a tomato and mayo sandwich. So delicious and perfect for hot weather. There’s nothing like the smell of toasted bread. Mmmmmmm…

Perfect summer dinner.

We went over to my parent’s house to see Mom on her birthday. She shared some of her awesome garden goodies.

I have no clue how to prepare eggplant. This should be interesting. Who knew eggplant came from such pretty flowers? I didn’t, that’s for sure.

Since I don’t have anything to mention about running, I’ll post my latest beauty haul. I recently saw a review of Colleen Rothschild Beauty on YouTube by LisaLisaD1. She mentioned that the eye cream and body lotion were amazing so, of course, I had to give them a try! I’ll share my thoughts once I’ve had a chance to try them.

I also got lucky and won a nifty pint glass from Nuun! I thought it would have a watermelon printed on it but it’s just the standard logo. *pouts*

That’s all for now. Kauai is sooooo close. I’m getting super excited for the trip. The half marathon is haunting me but I will have fun NO MATTER WHAT! 😀 Until next time, I’ll leave you with this…

Boo, wondering when I'll get out for a run next.

Boo, wondering when I’ll get out for my next run.

Wow! Only 27 days to go!

Yikes! Has it really been 15 days since I’ve posted??? I’m such a slacker. But I didn’t have much to blog about since I didn’t get out for any training runs. Yep, another half marathon without proper training. But I’m still going into it with the goal to finish. I’m looking forward to the sights, sounds and smells! I’m so excited for this half marathon! It’s creeping up so quickly! I’m stoked to meet Bart Yasso and Dean Karnazes at the expo/packet pick-up. I’ve also heard they’re hosting a shakeout run the morning before the event. Weeeeeee!!!

For the past two weeks, I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather. I thought I might be battling a cold but I never felt fully “sick”. Hmmmm, allergies maybe? I just couldn’t kick it. Which might be why I didn’t feel so great yesterday morning when my husband and I decided to run a local 5k/10k. I signed up for the 10k so I could add a bit of mileage to my (non-existent) training. Jon ran the 5k. My mind and body were all over the place! My stomach was jittery before the start but once we got going, I felt good. I was feeling strong and optimistic. My first mile was 10:13 which is pretty fast for me. Mile two was about 12:00. Then, at the 2.5 mile mark, the wheels fell off the bus. I had to stop running because my bladder was full. Seriously?!?! Not a honey bucket in sight. So I just kept walking. After the first 5k loop, I seriously considered calling it a day. I thought I had my mind made up when the volunteer at the 5k/10k turn off, gave me some encouragement. I couldn’t quit now, right? So I completed the 2nd loop…walking. I tried to speed up to a jog, here and there, but my bladder wasn’t having it. LOL So miles 3-5 were ugly. I have no idea what my splits were because my GPS watch is old and I kept forgetting to push the stupid “lap” button after each mile. I was busy day dreaming about porta potties. My last mile was about 14:10. I was able to shuffle a bit. I’m guessing that my profuse sweating was drying me out a bit. Ugh

Just finished. Still no honey buckets.

Just finished. Still Honey Bucketless.

After the run, we had to hustle it back to mom’s to pick up Boo and get him to his grooming appointment. We thought he’d be able to sleep more comfortably if his fur was sheared short. It’s been uncharacteristically hot for this area. Ick.

And just to add to the silliness. I asked Jon to take some photos of me and Boo after his haircut. Jon thought it would be funny to hold down the shutter and keep taking photos. I had to use Jedi mind tricks to retrieve my iPhone.

See. Proof that I don’t *always* scowl.

I have no idea when I’ll get out for another run. I’ve found that if I plan it, it doesn’t happen. *sigh* I’m aiming for sooner rather than later but I’m just going to leave it loosey goosey because that’s how I roll. See y’all later. 🙂
