The Fourth Week

…of half marathon training, that is. So far, so good. In the past, there was no such thing as “training” for me. I would run a few miles, here and there, then expect to run a half marathon without walking. Um yeah, it doesn’t work that way. Not for me, anyhow. LOL I’m determined to change my habits this time around. I’ve just started my 4th week and feeling pretty good.

Thursday, 5/28/15: 2.1 miles

Calm before the storm.

Calm before the storm.

The weather has been warming up day by day. By Tuesday, it was in the low 80s. Running in heat is my kryptonite. I was supposed to run 3 miles but I quit after 2.1. Sad. I’m wearing dayglo orange for visibility. I almost got hit by a car on Tuesday so it’s bright colors from now on. Eeep!

Saturday, 5/30/15: 5 miles

I forgot to stop my watch at 5 miles flat. LOL My time was 1:01:09.

I forgot to stop my watch at 5 miles flat. LOL My time was 1:01:09.

Sunday, 5/31/15: 3 miles

Before my 3 mile run.

I think I need to rotate my running tops a little more.

Jon is on the hunt for some better running shirts. Lululemon’s Metal Vent Tech tees are great for shorter runs but they get waterlogged and heavy for anything longer than 6 miles. Any ideas? What is your favorite running top? We went to Road Runner Sports to see what they had. Jon didn’t find a shirt but he surprised me with a Garmin 220. I’ve been wanting a new GPS watch for a while. My old watch was starting to get glitchy. Plus, it felt like I was wearing an anvil on my wrist. LOL

I took my new watch out for a spin on Tuesday. Ran 4 miles but didn’t get any photos because senile. I love the watch! It’s light weight and tracks your splits automatically! No more stalking my watch to push the stupid lap button! Wooohooo! Welcome to 2015, Michelle!

Thursday, 6/4/15: 4 miles

Saturday and Sunday were WAY too hot. WAY.

Saturday, 6/6/15: 6 miles

Saturday's stats.

Saturday’s stats.

Saturday’s run was a big deal for me. I haven’t run 6 miles without stopping/walking in years. If I remember correctly, the last time was at the 2008 Iron Girl 10K. I wasn’t sure that I could pull it off but I kept telling myself to think positive. I tried to get an early start to beat the heat. 8:40am isn’t very early but I kept smashing that snooze button. I felt good for most of my run. It was hot but there was a slight breeze to keep things sane. My run ended near my mother-in-law’s house. I met Jon there and cooled off in mom’s beautiful back yard. I was very thankful for a cool bench, a little shade and ice cold water with a tri-berry GU Hydration drink tablet.

Sunday’s 3 miler felt hard. I started out at 8am but it felt even warmer than the day before. Why am I such a wimp when it comes to heat?

Mom to the rescue! She took me out to Palace Bar and Grill in Federal Way for ice cold naeng myun. This was the perfect meal for a 90 degree day. After lunch, we stopped at H-Mart for some groceries. I picked up some goldfish shaped ice cream sandwiches. They come in a few different flavors like strawberry, sweet red bean paste (azuki beans) and plain vanilla. The outside layer is made of a thin wafer and filled with vanilla ice cream. I got red bean and it was delicious! Reminds me of the shave ice with ice cream and azuki beans I had in Oahu. YUM! 😛

Boo, our Schnoodle, had his buddy Lickity over to play. A cat caught Boo’s attention but Lickity is too short to look out the screen door. Problem solved.

That’s about all the rambling and awkwardness I have for now. Until next time, thanks for reading! 🙂

Happy Holidays!

In the words of Mr. Hankey, “HOWDY HO!” I’ve neglected the blog but mostly because I haven’t been running. I’ve been busy EATING ALL THE THINGS! Ugh. Jon is still rehabbing his injured knee but doing much better. He can run 3 miles without (much) pain. YAY!

Thanksgiving was uncharacteristically quiet this year. Jon and I had our moms over for dinner. I won’t bore you with photos of the turkey. BUT I must post pics of the pie because pie.

Best breakfast ever

Best breakfast ever

Cold pie with hot coffee is the most amazing breakfast ever. Seriously dangerous. Copious amounts of whipped cream are mandatory.

Jon doesn’t usually indulge but it was Thanksgiving. 😀 YUM! Even Boo got his first taste of turkey.

Western Washington got it’s first dusting of snow for the season. Then, temperatures dropped into the low 20s. Brrrrrrrrr. This just stokes my fire to move to Kauai some day soon.

So. Cold.

So. Cold.

We’re gearing up for Christmas and did a little gift shopping last weekend. IKEA is a madhouse forever! Saturdays there are downright frightening. LOL What little patience I possess was strongly tested. I kept imagining what would happen if a fire broke out and we had to run through the labyrinth that is IKEA. BBQ’d Michelle. That’s what would happen. *shudder* On a happier note, mom got us a pretty wreath to help us get into the spirit. It will be a Christmas miracle if no one steals it.

I will eventually get back to running. I hope. We’ve been weighing the pros and cons of a home treadmill. I’m a fair weather runner and even that’s a stretch. Hahaha, I’m a pathetic runner but a darned good ninja. Just kidding. I was trying out Jon’s balaclava.

Next time, I'll show you my nunchuck skills.

Next time, I’ll show you my awesome nunchuck skills.

Happy Holidays everyone! I’ll post again after I’ve run some miles.

My Purium 10-Day Transformation Cleanse Experience

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Purium. This is just my experience with their products.

I learned of Purium through my awesome friend Nancy. I saw that she was losing weight and working out like a beast! 😀 When Jon and I were in Kauai, she let us try the apple berry Power Shake. I was kind of surprised the shake tasted as good as it did. ha So when I got home from vacation, I decided to do the 10-Day cleanse. My weight has fluctuated since high school and I’ve been every size in the rainbow. <— I know that didn’t make sense. 😛 I figured I could stick with just about any plan for 10 days.

The day before I started the cleanse, I did exactly what I shouldn’t do, I ate a gigantic meal. I’m so smart sometimes. I went to a potluck at friend’s house and had some amazing food.

Vinh's amazing fried rice and Jodi's spam musubi. DELICIOUS!

And then I woke up…to start my cleanse. Eeep! The cleanse consisted of power shakes and Master Amino Acid Pattern supplements 3 times per day, a fiber drink and tart cherry juice concentrate before bed. I was allowed 3 servings of “flex foods” per day. Here are a few of the flex foods I ate during my cleanse:

Organic watermelon and blueberries

Avocado with himalayan pink salt and cayenne pepper

On the 7th day of the cleanse, I did something else that isn’t recommended. I barely completed a 10K run. I was planning on using my finish time as proof of time for the Disney Star Wars half marathon. Hopefully, I won’t be placed in the last corral. #slowrunnerproblems I was trying to come up with a breakfast that might fuel me through the run.

Microwaved Fuji apples with honey and cinnamon

Um…yeah. This didn’t work. I bonked at mile 3. Hmmmm, 3 miles seems to be where my brain tells my body to give up. I walk/ran the remaining 3 miles. I need to put in the time to see the results. I know this. Grrrrr.

Finally!

Finally!

Back to the cleanse. By the 8th day, I was over it. LOL I stuck it out to the end but my attitude was deteriorating. I was feeling good about the weight loss but eating fruits and vegetables exclusively was making me a bitter person. Hahaha

My results: In 10 days, I lost 11.4 pounds. I lost 3.5″ in my waist and 2 inches in hips. It’s been almost three weeks and I’ve kept the weight off. I haven’t decided if I’ll do another cleanse any time soon but this experience was a good one for me.

Two Weeks Plus One

I’m a poor excuse for a blogger, LOL. Sorry for the silence. I haven’t run since my last post so not much to blog about. I’ve been avoiding my training runs. Self-sabotage? Maybe BUT I’m still crossing that finish line!

On the other hand, my husband has stuck to his training plan 100%. He’s been waking up early, sometimes at four in the morning(!) on weekends to get in his long runs. I’m envious of his discipline and determination. I tend to procrastinate and let my inner fat kid make all the decisions. Ugh! My plan is to get out and run this weekend. Maybe I’ll have an update within the next few days. One bit of good news, I’ve lost about 9 pounds since the beginning of June just by making better food choices.

Thankfully, the weather finally cooled down a bit the past few days. My new favorite dinner has been a tomato and mayo sandwich. So delicious and perfect for hot weather. There’s nothing like the smell of toasted bread. Mmmmmmm…

Perfect summer dinner.

We went over to my parent’s house to see Mom on her birthday. She shared some of her awesome garden goodies.

I have no clue how to prepare eggplant. This should be interesting. Who knew eggplant came from such pretty flowers? I didn’t, that’s for sure.

Since I don’t have anything to mention about running, I’ll post my latest beauty haul. I recently saw a review of Colleen Rothschild Beauty on YouTube by LisaLisaD1. She mentioned that the eye cream and body lotion were amazing so, of course, I had to give them a try! I’ll share my thoughts once I’ve had a chance to try them.

I also got lucky and won a nifty pint glass from Nuun! I thought it would have a watermelon printed on it but it’s just the standard logo. *pouts*

That’s all for now. Kauai is sooooo close. I’m getting super excited for the trip. The half marathon is haunting me but I will have fun NO MATTER WHAT! 😀 Until next time, I’ll leave you with this…

Boo, wondering when I'll get out for a run next.

Happy 4th of July! 57 days until TKM!

My husband and I tried to revisit our tradition of going for a hike on the 4th of July. We were excited to see how Boo would react to his first time on a trail. After a short and pretty drive, we arrived at the Annette Lake trail head.

I-90 East

I-90 East

Boo was raring to go! So many new smells. LOL The weather was amazing. Sunny but not too hot and the trail was in the shade most of the way. About a quarter mile in, there’s a bridge over a creek where you can enjoy the waterfall. We stopped to take a selfie. I kept cutting off half of my face in the pics but finally got a half decent one. But why do I look so creepy?!? hahaha

My cardio fitness is obviously lacking because I was pressure breathing to try to slow down my thumping heart. Everything was going fine until I started to feel something flopping around under my right boot. I looked down to see this:

What. The. Heezy.

What. The. Heezy.

Umm, yeah… The sole of my boot was consciously uncoupling from the rest of the shoe! :/ It was hanging on by a thread but I had to completely pull it off to prevent tripping on it and breaking my bum. LOL Seriously! Does this kind of stuff happen to anyone else? hahaha Or is it just me? I didn’t have any duct tape or string to MacGyver the boot so we had to turn around. On the way down, my left sole decides it’s not happy either and starts to disintegrate. Really??? Hahaha All I can do at this point is laugh. Hiking back down 1.5 miles with no soles on your shoes is embarrassing AND slippery. As clutzy as I am, I’m surprised I made it back to the car without breaking anything. Guess who gets a new pair of hiking boots? THIS GIRL! 😀

Oh, the carnage.

Oh, the carnage.

Boo seemed to be oblivious to my wardrobe malfunction and was happy as a clam about his new experience. He was well behaved and got to meet a lot of other pups along the trail. We’re going to attempt this trail again, once I have a proper pair of boots. haha I’m so curious to see how Boo reacts to the lake because he’s never seen open water.

Jon and Boo

Well, that’s all for now. Just about every neighbor is outside, blowing up stuff so I have to go comfort Boo. He’s OK with firecrackers but someone in my ‘hood is setting off what sounds like half sticks of dynamite. Have a fun and safe 4th!

73 to go and a post two days in a row!

Work was totally unproductive today. Too many meetings and not enough focus. LOL BUT I got a free lunch so I can’t complain.

My husband’s ankle has been giving him grief the last few times he’s tried to run. After being fitted for running shoes and trying out a few different brands, he’s still having pain. Blah! We went for a short run today so he could track when and where the pain starts. Hopefully he’ll get some answers from his MD who might refer him to a sports medicine clinic if this doesn’t resolve. We walked for a half mile to warm-up, ran 1.75 and then walked a quarter mile cooldown. I tested out my Lululemon Pacesetter Skirt to see if I would have chafing issues. I used a bit of BodyGlide as a preemptive measure. TTP! (thigh touching problems) I’m happy to report, no issues! I’m guessing the skirt will be fine for 6 miles or less.

74 more.

OMG, two and a half months until the half marathon. Eeeep! I reluctantly went for a two mile walk/jog yesterday. *knock* *knock* “Is Motivation there?” *crickets*

At least I remembered to take a photo of my lunch. I picked up some Path of Life sauteed quinoa and kale pouches at Costco. They’re seasoned with garlic, olive oil and salt. Each pouch contains two servings and is pretty filling. I ate both 150 calorie servings. LOL They make for a quick and easy meal. As far as taste, they were good but a bit bland so I’d suggest adding some hot sauce for a little kick.

To celebrate getting into the Star Wars Rebel Challenge, I got myself a pair of Vans Star Wars slip ons. They were delivered today and I LOVE THEM! WOOT! Why do my ankles look sort of grubby? I swear I took a shower…yesterday. 😛
