+80 Degrees In The Pacific Northwest. Just No.

Won’t somebody, please, turn down the heat? I’m really trying to stick to my training plan but 88 degrees fahrenheit (31 celsius for my Canadian friends – I had to Google it because I’m metric system challenged) is too hot to run in! Seriously! I just can’t. I skipped my planned 5 mile run today. It’s just too hot and I’m not feeling 100%. Still have a nagging sore throat that’s causing some ear pain. Bummer.

The past week and a half of training has been pretty good WHEN my body is cooperating. I wasn’t feeling well last Thursday, skipped my run and went to bed at 7:00pm. So weird. I wasn’t very confident that I’d be able to run the full 7 miles on Saturday. Self-sabotage? Maybe. I knew it would be warm so I tried to get an early start. I still haven’t found a hydration belt that suits my needs. It’s hard finding a belt that can accommodate an iPhone6. Blah! I decided to give Jon’s Ultimate Direction Jurek Endure another try. Instead of using both bottles, I tried using just one. It bounced and shifted a bit at first, especially on downhills but it eventually settled. I like to wear belts slung low on my hips otherwise they shimmy up to my ribs. I’m still not sold. I think I need a little more stretch in the waist strap.

The good news is I ran the entire 7 miles! Wheeeeeeee! πŸ˜€ It was slow but I did it. Gave me an awesome confidence boost. On Sunday morning, Jon and I went to the Interurban Trail. I was to run 2 or 3 miles. I opted for 3 since I didn’t run on Thursday.

Sunday, 6/21/15: 3 miles

And since Sunday morning’s run went so well at the trail, Jon and I had the genius idea to go back there on Tuesday. Major difference being it was 5:00pm and 81 degrees. No shade, no breeze. Lots of sun, lots of heat. Needless to say, I was using colorful language throughout the bulk of my run. I did a 5 mile out and back. At the turn around point, some young gentleman (I’m using the word loosely here…) was yelling at everyone who passed him. Handing out free advice. He asked Jon why he wasn’t riding a bike and that he should be on a bike rather than running. Oooh-kayyy. This is how I know God works in mysterious ways. I was so incredibly hot and tired at that point but I wasn’t about to deal with this guy and let him catch up to me. So I tagged the halfway point, turned around and kept running. I wanted to stop so badly but I was just a little creeped out. LOL I guess He thought I needed a little extra motivation. πŸ˜‰

Tuesday, 6/23/15: 5 miles (1:01:48)

This is never a good sign. But then again, Jon could have pushed me down the trail in it.

At the start of 5 miles.

Looking happy at the start of 5 miles.

This Saturday is 7 miles again. Wish me luck. Ha! Next Saturday is the exciting “MOMENT OF TRUTH”. 8 miles. Will I be able to do it?!?! <insert dramatic marmot here> *dun dun dun* Until next time, thanks for reading!

And so it begins…with a dash of randomness.

As planned, I started my half marathon training last week. I’m following a 16 week program that Jon found on http://www.halfmarathons.net (not affiliated). It consists of 4 runs per week: Tuesday, Thursday, long run on Saturday and shorter recovery run on Sunday. The first week went pretty well. I’m at 3 to 4 miles per day. Saturday was my 4 mile “long” run. Being Memorial Day weekend and all, it was drizzling rain in my neighborhood. Typical. These crackling power lines on my route are just a little scary. πŸ˜›

Hills are unavoidable unless I want to run in circles around my house. Ugh. It’s great practice for the Kauai course but the hills are no joke. When my calves are on the verge of cramping and my quads are crying, I tell myself “Make that hill your b*tch!” hahaha It works! Try it. Just don’t say it too loud.

The weather is warming up and it’s been muggy lately. Last Thursday was tough, almost 80 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to get up to near 80 again. I hope my 3 miles goes by quickly. This Saturday is 5 miles. Eeeeep! My longest run since last October. I’ll try to get it out of the way early in the morning to beat the heat. For some of y’all mid 70s to 80 degrees might be fine but I dread it. πŸ˜€ Such a heat wimp!

Here are some of my running OOTD.

A couple of weeks ago, Jon and I went to Las Vegas and spent some time with his sister Julie and her husband Jeff. They were in the midst of a whirlwind road trip and we thought it would be a great time to meet up with them. We had a fantastic time! Caught a show, window shopped, had a Hugh Hefner sighting (LOL) and visited M&M World. We stayed at the Hilton Grand Vacations Suites at the Flamingo. This was my first hotel experience in a room with a full kitchen. hehehe It was awesome. I was running around taking photos of the stove, microwave, coffeemaker and tub. Such a dork! Guests of the Hilton have access to the pool at The Flamingo. Can you say “Night at the Roxbury” swim stylee, yo! I wish I would’ve brought my swim stuff! Definitely the fun spot for the younger crowd.

Dinner at Bacchanal was a let down at $60 per person (not including beer or wine). For that price, the food should be hot. Everything we tried was lukewarm and unless you wanted to stalk the pizza bar for fresh, hot pizza you were eating warm food. The sushi was good and the sauteed green beans (by the Chinese food, not the almondine over by the italian food, LOL) were the best I’ve ever had but it just couldn’t make up for what was lacking. 😦 The following day, we tried Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood. We weren’t expecting much based on the yelp reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. The dolmas and chicken kabobs were really good. I wish I would’ve taken some photos at Spice Market but my brain was on vacation.

It was nice to get away for the weekend and we really enjoyed spending time with Julie and Jeff. ❀ We’ll be seeing them again at Christmas, this time in Texas. Yay!

One week down, 15 weeks to go! Until next time, thanks for reading!
